AI Background Removal vs Manual Cutouts — Which Wins?

We pitted ROOK.oi's background remover against Photoshop's pen tool on 25 test images. Here's what we learned.

The setup

We used 25 real photos: people, products, pets and a few intentionally difficult edge cases with hair and translucency.

Speed

AI: average 1.4 seconds per image. Manual pen tool: average 7 minutes per image. No contest there.

Quality

AI matched manual cutouts on 22 of 25 images. The three losses were translucent fabrics — solvable with our high-detail mode.

Verdict

For 95% of work, AI is the right default. Save manual cutouts for compositing where pixel-perfect control matters.
